#1 on the 101 in 1001 was to buy a car. Our previous car had been on the outs for a while now, and passed away last fall. Since then we had been researching and thinking what we wanted to do for a car next. We're not wealthy, so buying a car is a big move for our bank account. We tried to take our time and make it count.
Well, last Friday we did it! On February 4, 2011 we bought a car! Here she is!
She's a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 240D, manual. We've decided to name her "the naughty blonde," based on a comment our dear Melba made about her. She is in great shape for her age. It looks like a previous owner did a restoration within the past 5 years or so. Our intention in buying this car was to find a car we could run on grease. Our current plan is to do a dual tank conversion.
Does that sound like nonsense to you? Do you have no idea what I'm talking about? No fear- I plan to fully explain the process as we go through it and learn about it ourselves. Basically- we hope to run it off vegetable oil (usually used for cooking then refined). A dual tank conversion means there will be two tanks- one with diesel and one with veggie oil. That way you can switch back and forth if need be.
We're still doing some research on the process, but are excited to learn. Living in such a car-centric city as Los Angeles we really wanted to be conscience of how our car was effecting the environment and be more aware and thoughtful of where the money we spend on our car, gas, etc. was going.
I'm really excited to learn about this! I hope the whole experience will allow me to learn a lot more about cars, and be conscience of the work it takes to take car of them, and make them last. So far, we're loving the great resources over at Mercedes Source.
This process will knock three tasks off my 101 list:
58. Learn how to drive a manual transmission
59. Change the Oil in a Car
60. Learn how to convert a car to run on grease- share how.
Anyone out there run a car off grease? We'd love to hear about it, and see what you did!
Until Then.
I love you.
