No joke...learning to drive a stick shift has been one of the MOST frightening items on my 101 list. No joke, I have recurring anxiety dreams that involve me losing control of a car and crashing. I'm not kidding. I'm that crazy. I can drive automatic no problem. That's easy. But something about manual terrified me- I felt like I was going to all of a sudden loose control, not be able to stop, or start falling backwards down a hill and crash our car! So when it came time for me to learn I was a nervous wreck. But I am happy to report I am ready to check it off the list. I HAVE LEARNED. I still get a little nervous, and I still need to practice, but I have made great strides.
The "ah ha" moment came when I realized having the clutch in is the same as neutral SO when you're puling away from a stop and you drift back it's BECAUSE you have the clutch in! All I had to do was let off the clutch and put the car in gear and it's fine. This may seem like a no brainer to some, but that was the clicking moment for me.
I made it to and from work on my own in the naughty blonde last weekend, which was nerve racking, and rough going at times (2nd gear is not my friend), BUT I proved I could do it!
Here are some videos of me on a driving lesson. I like to talk through what I'm doing- it's how I learn. Of course, every time B filmed nothing cool happened. Then he'd turn off the camera and something funny would happen. Go figure.
I'm so proud of you!!! I can now say I've officially learned as well. Kevin has to take less grueling trips to the grocery store and I can get places on my own when he isn't around. I do hate stick in the city though. I hate shifting when the stop sign is coming. And when i'm on a hill, i notice that my face starts to hurt b/c i'm clenching my jaw (as if that would stop me from rolling backwards too far) :) Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGood work! Now that the anxiety is past, don't you think that driving a stick is one of the most fun things ever? I never want to go back. Congrats on being able to check another goal off the list!
